Feb. 17, 2012 — Though a dusting of snow fell mid-week around the Whitefish Chain, warmer-than-adverage tempreatures have reduced trails to dirt. Trails are still not groomed, and due of ice conditions, the trails have not yet been marked on area lakes. Updated trail conditions will be posted here as more winter snow arrives. Think snow!!
Snowmobiling
Winter is wonderful in the Whitefish Area. Minnesota's Brainerd Lakes Area offers access to hundreds of miles of well marked snowmobile trails, across lakes and woodlands and along scenic roadways. Crosslake, Pequot Lakes and Pine River all offer winter festivals. In fact, the International Antique Snowmobiles Association holds their annual event in Pequot Lakes every January.
Your winter lodging hosts will have trail maps available for you or view one online now. Snomobiling is also available on the Paul Bunyan Trail, a paved railroad bed that runs from Brainerd to Bemidji. Trails are maintained several days per week by the six snowmobile clubs in the area, including the Whitefish Area's own club, the Ideal Sno Pros.
Enjoy your ride and don't forget to purchase your trail sticker. Find a complete listing of Minnesota Snowmobile Safety Laws, Rules and Regulations on the DNR's web site.
